February Homework BINGO

Hi Grade 3 Parents,

Today your child brought home a brand new purple pocket folder / duotang. This folder contains the new BINGO board as well as any printouts that are required for this month. The sheets for the month are in the pocket. As the students complete their work, they should pop it into the duotang clips. As usual, a row, column, or (new) 4 corners will earn a BINGO! Any extra tasks that are completed are bonus!

Please reach out if you have any questions!

WINTER FUN DAY IS COMING! If you haven’t yet, PLEASE COMPLETE THIS GOOGLE FORM!

Vroom Vroom to the Makerspace We Go!

We went on an adventure today… All the way to the OJCS Makerspace!

Mr. Ray greeted us and explained some of the different leadership roles we would be able to try out today while building. We were given a bag of materials and told to get started. He reminded us that we celebrate mistakes and failed attempts! That’s how we learn best!!

Some of us figured out right away that the goal was to build a car… and some of us needed to work with the materials first. After 5 minutes of building, Mr. Ray showed us a short clip of a video to help us assemble the wheels.

We worked together, problem solved, and built cars!

“When I was making the car, the elastic band didn’t work… but it was still really really fun!”

“The hardest thing was when we put the elastic on the bottom because it kept falling off. I’m not sure how we will fix it, but I know we can figure it out!”

“I liked being the Lead Mechanic because I really enjoyed building stuff.”

Stay tuned for next week when we race the cars!

New Year, New BINGO Board

Welcome Back!

Today was a day of New Year activities. We had a class discussion about what we want more of and less of in 2023. The students suggested more sleep in 2023… so feel free to bump up those bed times! We also started one of my favourite activities today; UNLOCK THE NEW YEAR! (a 10-challenge long Math activity). As we complete the challenges, we get closer and closer to unlocking the New Year!

With the new year and a new month… we have a new BINGO board!

Oh Chanukah, Math-manukah

This week we took our problem solving skills and applied them to a series of Chanukah themed Math problems!

We worked on 4 different problems;

Morah Lianna made latkes for her friends and family. She fried up 72 latkes for her 18 students in 3A and all of the 35 teachers at OJCS. How many did she have left after 3A and all the teachers ate their latkes?

Morah Lianna was collecting gelt to play dreidels with. She collected 80 chocolate coins, but while she was on recess duty, Mrs. Cleveland ate 17 of them and Ms. Beswick came to take 25 of them. How many chocolate coins did Morah Lianna have left?

Morah Lianna and Cooper were getting ready to light the Chanukiah. She had 28 candles ready for the holiday, but Cooper accidentally ate 6 candles and broke 4 more. How many candles did Morah Lianna have left?

Morah Lianna was making Chanukah gift bags. She made 8 bags in total. Each bag will have 2 dreidels, 2 sufganiyot, and 5 chocolate coins. How many dreidels does Morah Lianna need to buy? How many sufganiyot does Morah Lianna need to buy? How many chocolate coins does she need to buy? What if she wanted to make 10 gift bags in total, instead of 8?

The students worked in small groups to answer their problem.

Then they all shared their thinking and reasoning in order to learn from each other! We even worked as a class to correct some of the errors we made with our Math operations (#NorthStarAlert! We Learn Better Together)

Stay tuned for next week’s Chanukah related Math problem!

Chanukah Rehearsal Time!

Hi Grade 3 Students!

Please practice the lyrics for the SONG we are SINGING at the Family Chanukah Celebration!
Here is the video with the song and I have the lyrics that you should practice typed out below.

Chorus 1:
Tonight is Hanukkah
Got everything we need
A frying pan, some oil
And a latke recipe
Let’s celebrate our ancestry
We’ve got ooh, ooh, ooh The latke recipe

Chorus 2:
Tonight is Hanukkah
Got everything we need
A frying pan, some oil
For your latke recipe
Let’s celebrate our victory
We’ve got ooh, ooh, ooh The latke recipe

Chorus 3:
Tonight is Hanukkah
Got everything we need
A frying pan, some oil
For your latke recipe
Let’s celebrate our ancestry
We’ve got ooh, ooh, ooh The latke recipe

Slow Part:
Two thousand years
Of joyous celebration
A single jar
That burned for eight days
The food we eat
As part of our tradition
Keeps that flame alive!

Chorus 4:
Tonight is Hanukkah
Got everything we need
Good friends and family here to try
Our latke recipe
Best served with applesauce, you see
We’ve got ooh, ooh, ooh The latke recipe

Student Blogger: My Hobby Is…

One of our November BINGO tasks was to create a poster about a hobby and present it to the class. This week, one of our students presented her poster on reading! For the privacy of the child, please do not use her name in the comments. Below is the script from her presentation.

The title is… I like reading!

You could make books about your life and you can make books into movies like Harry Potter. If you read more, the faster you get. In non-fiction books you learn facts and other people can make books about your life. Fiction books make you imagine. Reading gives us quiet time and it makes you smarter.

(Question from the class) What are your favourite books to read?

I like reading Harry Potter, The Babysitters Club, Evil Spy School, and Babysitters Little Sister.

(Question from the class) How did you get interested in reading?

When I started reading in Grade 2, I got into it a lot more. I started with the Owl Diaries books.

Globally Collected Soil

As we wrapped up our Science unit on Soil, we FINALLY had the chance to look at all of the bags of soil that have been arriving in the mail over the last month! It started with a quick tweet & a share on Facebook by one of our Grade 3 parents… and voila! 7 bags of soil from around North America!

We started the activity by looking up the various places on the map. Two students were in charge of using Google to show the locations on our SMART board and 2 students were in charge of then finding it on our classroom wall map.

It was great to see the class work together to find the locations and make connections to places they have been!

Then we reviewed the various types of soil that we have been learning about and started passing around the bags! The students were able to touch the soil and look at it through the bag, then they needed to determine which type of soil it was.

We were so excited to see and feel the very clear differences among all of the different soils!

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to every who mailed us bags of soil! This activity would not have been possible without you!

Scholastic Book Club

Hi Kitah Gimmel Parents,

I am excited to share that we are re-launching the Scholastic Book Club! What is this Scholastic Book Club? Glad you asked! The book club is an EASY way to order books for your child to read at home AND each time you place an order, our whole class benefits! When you use our class code (RC110679), we earn rewards to purchase new books for our classroom library! Personally, I have my eyes on the new Bad Guys book and some more books from the Jory John and Pete Oswald series for our classroom!

So how do you join?

You might have a vague pre-covid memory of Scholastic flyers going home with your child each month… well now, there’s no need to check your child’s backpack for a flyer and no need to send money into school for book orders.
Scholastic has gone virtual!

Start by visiting this website: https://www.scholastic.ca/readingclub

Then you just need to follow these few simple steps:

New books and flyers are added each month! Please feel free to share our class code with any grandparents or relatives who are thinking of purchasing books for your child! I hope you take advantage of this awesome program and help us earn class rewards. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out!
