Supporting the Ottawa Kosher Food Bank

Shalom Kita Gimmel families!

As we get closer to the summer, we have one more important holiday: Shavuot. This holiday marks the receiving of the ten commandments, Z’man mattan torateinu, and has a few other different names. We will be learning about these names and their corresponding themes starting next week and leading up to our school-wide Shavuot assembly on Friday, May 30th. I’d like to highlight one name: Chag Ha’Bikkurim – the holiday of the first fruits, which were brought to the holy temple in Jerusalem by the farmers. This was a happy time, full of gratitude and sharing, and we are embodying those values here at OJCS.

Beginning next week, we will be collecting donations of items for the Ottawa Kosher Food Bank to be presented in honour of Shavuot. Please see the poster below for what items are the most needed, and most appreciated. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

March-April Hebrew Homework Board

Shalom Kita Gimmel families,

Today we begin a 6 week homework board for Hebrew and Jewish studies, due on Thursday, April 10th. Each student received a print out of the bingo board and should have it in their backpack or note tote. Only a handful of folders (dark grey) came back, so please remind your child to check if they have it at home! Thank you!

This month, the reading folder also contains writing and comprehension options. See “read me first” in the folder. Please send me an email of which specific text(s) you would like me to print for your child if they prefer to read a paper copy. I have gone over the board with the class but if there are any questions please reach out. Enjoy!

Grade 3 Athletics

Athletics in Grade 3:

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Grade 3 athletics:

Wednesday, September 25th:

Jake Gesperetti (Ottawa Black Bears) and Sam Firth (Albany FireWolves) joined our Grade 3 class for a little Lacrosse 101. The two Ottawa natives are professional lacrosse players in the NLL. They taught the students about the history of Canada’s national game before beginning a little tutorial on the basics of the sport. Students participated in passing, cradling and shooting drills. They concluded the drills with a penalty shootout and some autographed pictures. We all had a blast and are looking forward to seeing the Black Bears vs FireWolves during the NLL season.

Friday, September 27th: Terry Fox Run

Students learned the incredible story of one of Canada’s greatest heroes through the Scholastic Voici Terry story. We also listened to Je Cours Comme Terry song by Gregg Lerock. We discussed the incredible bravery and determination shown by Terry during his Marathon of Hope. Students were amazed to see all of the parks, schools, streets and athletic facilities named after Terry.

Grade 3 participated in the school-wide assembly before doing a 30 minute run in honour of Cancer research and the Terry Fox foundation.

Tuesday, October 1st: Jamboree

Turnbull hosts this annual soccer tournament for students in Grade 3. Several private schools participate in this wonderful event celebrating the beautiful game. OJCS had a team in the Recreational level and the Competitive track. Everyone had a great time and quite a few Lionel Messi jerseys were seen in the OJCS hallways. Each team played 3 different games with opponents from Kanata Montessori, Turnbull and Elmwood. This was the first opportunity for students to wear the blue OJCS Rams Jersey. We hope to have more opportunities to participate in local sporting events.Â
