February break may be starting, but I am buzzing with excitement about all of the upcoming events at school! Here is just a quick post to make sure your calendars are up to date with all of the amazing happenings here upon your return to school after Feb. Break!
March 6-10: RUACH WEEK
With Ruach Week… we have PURIM! Our OJCS Purim Carnival is back and we need your help! Please see the flyer below for more details! (The carnival is only open to students and takes place during school hours)

March 30: Innovation Day
You will be invited into the classroom on the morning of Innovation Day to see your child’s project!

Today your child brought home a brand new purple pocket folder / duotang. This folder contains the new BINGO board as well as any printouts that are required for this month. The sheets for the month are in the pocket. As the students complete their work, they should pop it into the duotang clips. As usual, a row, column, or (new) 4 corners will earn a BINGO! Any extra tasks that are completed are bonus!

Today was a day of New Year activities. We had a class discussion about what we want more of and less of in 2023. The students suggested more sleep in 2023… so feel free to bump up those bed times! We also started one of my favourite activities today; UNLOCK THE NEW YEAR! (a 10-challenge long Math activity). As we complete the challenges, we get closer and closer to unlocking the New Year!
With the new year and a new month… we have a new BINGO board!

REMINDER: We will have a special PJ Day this Friday (January 13th) to make up for the missed one on our snow day in December! Please make sure your child wears a pair, and brings a pair to donate to the Pyjama Patrol!
Just a quick note about some important reminders for next week…
Tuesday, December 20th is our Family Chanukah Celebration! We have been practicing our big performance and can’t wait to perform! For costumes, please have your child wear a brown (or yellow) shirt to make it look like they are a latke. Upon arrival at school that evening, your child can meet me in the classroom to get ready for the big show while you find a seat in the gym.
Friday, December 23rd is PJ day! Instead of a loonie or toonie for dress down day, we are asking families to bring in a new pair of PJs to donate to the “Pyjama Patrol”.

Just a quick reminder that we are visiting the Scholastic Book Fair as a class tomorrow morning! Please feel free to attach instructions to money (i.e. ‘must only be spent on books’, ‘buy one English and one French book’, ‘buy something for the class from the wish list’, etc.)
Parents are able to shop during drop off and pick up Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, OR Thursday from 6:00-7:30pm and Friday 8:30am-12:00pm. Can’t make it in? Don’t worry! You can even shop online here: theojcs.ca/bookfair… SO MANY OPTIONS!
Students can also visit the book fair during recess throughout the week! I know some students brought some money in today to shop at recess time! Woot woot!
We have two exciting things coming up on the OJCS calendar and we want to make sure that you have your calendars marked!
The Scholastic Book Fair! This is a great way to support the OJCS library while also purchasing books for your library at home! We will be visiting as a class on Wednesday, December 7th. However, throughout the week, parents can pop into the bookfair before and after school; it opens at 8:30AM and closes at 4:00PM. The bookfair will also be open on Thursday night (Dec. 8) during P/T Conferences from 6:00PM-7:30PM and Friday (Dec. 9) during P/T Conferences from 8:30AM-12:00PM. Feel like shopping from home? Use the Virtual Book Fair Link! I will be sending home a flyer today that you can browse with your child in preparation for the Book Fair! We have already started putting together our class wishlist!
Family Chanukah Celebration
On Tuesday, December 20th at 6:30pm, we will gather as a school community to celebrate Chanukah IN PERSON for the first time in years! Come join us for an evening of performances and a sweet Chanukah treat. I will absolutely be there in my favourite Chanukah sweater!

Please return any completed Homework BINGO cards from November this week. A new BINGO board will be assigned on Monday next week.
The students were VERY excited about the snow falling today… and even more excited to look out our classroom window and see the HUGE snow plows on the roads!
With all of this excitement for snow, many of our students forgot to bring in-door shoes today. Please pack them in your child’s backpack for tomorrow, so they can leave them in their lockers! Keeping extra socks in their backpacks / lockers is also a great idea!

I am excited to share that we are re-launching the Scholastic Book Club! What is this Scholastic Book Club? Glad you asked! The book club is an EASY way to order books for your child to read at home AND each time you place an order, our whole class benefits! When you use our class code (RC110679), we earn rewards to purchase new books for our classroom library! Personally, I have my eyes on the new Bad Guys book and some more books from the Jory John and Pete Oswald series for our classroom!
So how do you join?
You might have a vague pre-covid memory of Scholastic flyers going home with your child each month… well now, there’s no need to check your child’s backpack for a flyer and no need to send money into school for book orders.
Scholastic has gone virtual!
Then you just need to follow these few simple steps:
New books and flyers are added each month! Please feel free to share our class code with any grandparents or relatives who are thinking of purchasing books for your child! We have been learning about Soil in Science class this term… and this week, we took the learning outside!
We collected soil from the ground right outside our school and got ready for our first soil related experiment.
Step 1: collect soil from outside and put it in a clear plastic cup
Step 2: make predictions about what will happen right when we add water to the cup and what will happen once it sits for 24 hours
Step 3: pour the water & mix it up! (then let it sit overnight)
Step 4: record our observations
It wouldn’t be a true Science lesson if we didn’t find ways to integrate our Scientific Study of Words (aka Structured Word Inquiry). So before we even made predictions, we looked at the word <prediction>.
Right away we noticed the prefix and the suffix <-ion>. We also learned what a bound base is!
Here are the predictions we made…
What will happen when we put water in the soil cups?
Ron: The soil will be all mushy and soggy, the dirt will dissolve and turn the water brown
Yaara: the dry soil will become wet like mud
Ella: The soil will turn into mud
Solly: It will turn into mud
Miko: The soil will move to the top of the cup
What will happen to the cup of water and soil if we let it sit for more than 24 hours?
Ahron: The dirt will be like a sponge an absorb all the water
Ollie: The dirt will absorb the water
Elise: The dirt will absorb the water, but there will still be water in the cup
Abby: There will only be a little bit of water
Galit: The soil will turn to mud
Reuven: the soil will become liquid, then mud, then just be wet soil
Raz: the soil will turn mushy
Boaz: The water will spread all around the dirt into the different parts and the soil will be mushy
Naama: It will turn into mud
We let our cups of water and soil sit overnight and then went back to see what happened!
Of course, we did another word investigation…
I was SO impressed that the students noticed the double suffix right away! We know that the <at> in observation comes from the suffix <-ate>! Ella was able to tell us that the base word means to look or to see something.
We were able to see the different layers of the soil and noticed that heavier particles sunk to the bottom of the water, while lighter bits floated to the top.
