This week our class has been preparing for Rosh Hashanah by learning the Tefillot (prayers), and the difference between the blessings for Yom Tov and the regular brachot we say when there are no holidays. We also learned about Tashlich and how we spend this time of year thinking about how we can be better versions of ourselves.

//October is month full of celebrations and time to be with family.
In our OJCS homework policy, it is stated that homework is not to be set over holidays. With this in mind, for the month of October:
General Studies:
I will be setting weekly general studies homework as usual but the amount will be reduced and there will be NO WEEKLY MATH QUIZZES.
Math quizzes will resume in November.
Hebrew:
Morah Sigal will continue to set daily reading on the days children are in school (as usual this will not be set on a Friday)
French:
Monsieur P will be adjusting as follows:
//Good afternoon all,
We have a busy Friday this week so here is a little reminder about what is happening!
Friday is our first dress down day AND the OJCS Terry Fox run. Students need to bring sneakers that you can change into to do the run on the field. Also dress appropriately for doing the Terry Fox run (athletic clothes are best!)
We ask that you can donate whatever you can; usual amount is a Toonie for Terry.

//Calling all potential Grade 3 representatives!
Each class from grades 3-8 will have one student representative on the Knesset*.聽
Students must express an interest in being the class representative by the end of day on October 4. Candidates will prepare a 60-90 second speech to present to the class by the end of October 11. Voting will take place by secret ballot in a polling station.
Students can also create election posters.
Any interested students should get the information form from Miss M.
*The OJCS Knesset (Student Council) is the representative body for students at the Ottawa Jewish Community School. The role of the Knesset聽 is to represent and promote the interests of students to staff, administration, and parents. The council organizes events to promote student life and Tikkun Olam while developing and supporting student leadership. The executive and class representatives model our 7 Habits and North Stars.
//Happy Thursday everyone!
Again, I am astonished at how quickly time is passing. This week we have looked into our first science topic of plants, opened up our curiosity into structure word inquiry (we will become investigators of language!) continued our reviews of all things math, exploring new ways and strategies to help find the answer. Our Guided reading book at the moment is Stuart Little (who knew hats and canes could be so small!?) Plus the beginning of our research skills workshops. Creative writing has become the most requested extension task this week; opening the imagination to the creation of graphic novels, fiction and non fiction with the added bonus of working on collaboration and team work skills.
With this class, there is no ceiling!

What a wonderful week it has been in Kitah Gimmel! This week we focused on 讬砖 诇讬, 讗讬谉 诇讬 (I have, I don’t have). Today we learned about the Parashat Hashavua and finished the day with tefillot.

//Good Morning Grade 3 (and parents!)
I was re-capping Math review/practise skills and thinking how often do we get stuck with ‘just worksheets…’ Worksheets can be helpful and if they are best learning style for you then great.
But what happens when that is not the best way for you? What else can you do?
I have found a cool Number circle review (access the link here) which is another way to recap your 4’s and 6’s – this week’s homework
There are many different ways to learn so don’t worry if you are ‘not getting it’, we just need to find another way that fits you!

//Keeping our North Stars in mind, and one in particular “There is a floor here but no ceiling”, made me think about how I can push our grade 3 “ceiling” up, up and away…
And there Genius Hour was; waiting to be noticed! Mr Ray and Mrs Thompson introduced this concept to the Middle school last year and what a creative success it was. So after spending time researching and planning how to implement into Grade 3 – here we are. Grade 3 were introduced to Genius Hour yesterday and their response was phenomenal!
Here is聽 a video I showed the class about Genius Hour. I encourage you to watch this with your child and see their excitement about how their creativity and imagination can guide them anywhere they choose.
This will predominantly be a project we work on in school but of course enthusiasm and excitement will run over into home and if this is the case, I will adjust homework set that week. As always, if you have any questions about this, please email and we can discuss further.
